OLD LOVES

Recycle your gold with
Michael Hill

Ancient and immortal, gold is a gift from the earth that is eternally crafted, loved, and recrafted. Each speck of raw, natural gold is brimming with possibilities, so recycle yours with Michael Hill.

We’ll give it new life, and you an e-gift card to use on a beautiful new piece.

How to transform your gold?

Step 1. Send your gold
jewellery to us

Recycling your gold is easy. Simply create an account, request a secured recycling kit to be sent to you, and then post your jewellery to us – for free. We’ll take it from there.

Step 2. We’ll assess your jewellery

Once we receive your packaged item(s), our team will assess its ‘true gold’ content and determine our offer to you. Don't worry if you don’t hear back from us straight away, this process can take up to 14 days.

Step 3. You’ll receive your quote

Once your old gold has been assessed, we’ll send you a quote. It’s obligation-free too. Simply respond to us within three days to either receive your Michael Hill e-gift card or have your items securely returned to you.

Before you start

At Michael Hill, we pride ourselves on being the jeweller that cares. As a member of the Responsible Jewellery Council, we’re committed to ensuring that our pieces are sourced and consumed ethically, sustainably and responsibly. You can trust us to take care with where your gold comes from and where goes next, as it’s passed from your hands to another’s.
We accept all gold as part of our recycling program. We’ll happily recycle any yellow, white or rose gold that’s 9-carats or over.

The easiest way to weigh your jewellery is to use a small kitchen scale at home.

Keep in mind, your kitchen scales will give a rough idea, however we use professionally calibrated and jewellery trade verified scales for precious metals.

The easiest and best way to figure out if your jewellery is gold is to get it assessed by your local jeweller. They’ll look for your jewellery's hallmark to confirm that it's gold. Some jewellery even has visible hallmarks that you can see with the naked eye. If you can read yours, simply enter its details when filling out the online form.

The marking will either be an obscure 3-digit numeric set, such as 585, or it could be an obvious tell such as 14k for 14 karat. The 3-digit reference ties in with a common standards chart where number sets dictate the percentage of gold involved.
999, for example, is the purist amount, essentially 24 karat gold with a 99.9999% purity. On the other hand, 750 is indicative of a 75% purity level, better known to most as 18 karat gold. The 3-digit stamp sequence generally gets identified as follows:

  • 999.9 or 999 - 24 karat gold
  • 916, 917 - 22 karat gold
  • 750 - 18 karats
  • 585, 583, 575 - 14 karats
  • 417 - 10 karat gold (typically the lowest one you will find in U.S. markets)
  • 375 - 9 karats
Unfortunately, we don’t recycle gemstones or diamonds right now. If you still want to recycle your gold with us, we recommend having the gemstones professionally removed before you send your pieces in.
Not at this stage, unfortunately, but you can collect a secured recycling kit from any of our Michael Hill stores here in New Zealand. From there, simply package up your old jewellery, and head to your nearest New Zealand Post Office to send it off. The recycling pack will then securely make its way to our Head Office to be professionally assessed.
Sending jewellery can feel a bit scary, that’s why make sure we track the items and give you all the tools to check the status of your recycling kit too. If you feel that your delivery is taking longer than expected, please contact us immediately. If your recycling kit has been confirmed 'lost' by New Zealand Post, we’ll offer you a Michael Hill e-gift card for the reasonable value of your items, however  terms and conditions apply.

Let's begin

We are on a mission to help save the planet.
What does this mean?

Our 2030 Sustainability Goals put a clear roadmap in place to guide us and inspire our industry towards a better future. Product circularity, including gold recycling, is an important way for businesses to improve their impact on the planet – reducing waste, saving precious raw materials, and contributing to the regeneration of biodiversity.
